Kambayanatham Rangaswami Kanakavalli, popular as K R Chellam, is a famous Indian actress known for her prominent acting in Tamil films. She was born in 1918 in a Tamil-speaking Hindu Brahmins family in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu. She has two siblings, and her father was a lawyer, Rangaswami, who raised his children after the death of his wife. She got married at a young age to an insurance salesman in Bombay. With her two daughters, the couple shifted to Madras, facing financial instabilities. At that time, the filming industry has considered an outlawed career, so she switched her name for the stage, Chellam. Chellam entered the film industry to support her family financially. In 1935, she made her debut with the film Kausalya in a minor role. The film was a super hit in the industry, which has gained her popularity in South Indian Cinema.

In 1936, she got her first central role in the film Madras Mail by C N Trivedi with the help of a famous actress T. N. Meenakshi. Since then, she got name and fame, and due to her excellent acting skills, she has signed in numerous films opposite famous film stars. Surya Puthri (1941), En Manaivi (1942), Karaikkal Ammaiyar (1943), Prabhavathi (1944), Meera (1945), Lavangi (1946), Naam Iruvar (1947), Vedhala Ulagam (1948), Bhaktha Jana (1948), Thai Ullam (1951), Jatagam (1953), Rajee En Kanmani (1954), Kalvanin Kadhali (1955), Karpukkarasi (1957), Aval Yaar (1959), and Pattaliyin Vetri (1960) are some of the notable films by KR Chellam. Her last film was Paavai Vilakku, directed by K Somu and released on 19 October 1960.
