He has three brothers - Srinivasa Rao, Venkataramana Rao and Krishnamurthy Rao. He initially joined the theatre company of Periya Sama Iyer, where he acted as Balabart, Mohini, Rajabart, Pillaiyar and Saraswati. Secondly, he joined the theatre company of Veera Raghavalu Naidu and then later, he joined Chinna Sama Iyer's company. On this journey, he met Munuswamy Naidu and Vel Nair, who later became friends with him. Rao's debut movie was 'Shakundala' as the character 'Matavyan' in the year 1934.
