Narayana Rao is a Telugu TV serial that aired on DD Saptagiri. The plot revolves around a marriage arrangement in an Indian setting. The characters in the show include Jaganmohan (a wealthy landlord), Narayan Rao (A well-educated man who has completed his law degree), and Sarada. The story revolves around this love triangle. Jaganmohan is a wealthy landlord who owns multiple villages and is Sarada’s relative. He has liked Sarada even from childhood and he believes he has a claim to marry Sarada. She gets two marriage proposals for her. One is from Jaganmohan and the other is brought by her father from Narayan Rao. Her father discovers Narayan Rao on the Bejawada train platform and considers him for his daughter Sarada. He favors Narayan Rao despite his more modest background. Jaganmohan attempts to assert his claim based on wealth and status. The father values education and character over wealth, supported by his father who advises that marriages should be between equals. Sarada is also into Narayana Rao as he is well educated.
Jaganmohan at the same time tries to get the marriage proposal in favour of him. But her father goes forward with Narayana Rao. And finally, Narayana Rao and Sarada get married. Jaganmohan laments his loss, calling himself unlucky. The rest of the story is about how these couples lead their lives and also gives a vivid picture of the progressiveness taking place in society. The story is set in a traditional Indian household. The story explores themes of class differences, traditionally arranged marriages, and the conflict between wealth and character in marriage decisions. The story also explores the tension between traditional status-based marriages and unions based on education and compatibility in Indian society. The story shows how education begins to supersede traditional markers of social standing in marriage arrangements.
