Socrates K Valath

Socrates Krishnan Valath is a writer, journalist, and director who has worked in Malayalam cinema and television. Valath is a novelist and short-story writer who is chiefly known for the novel Aanandalahari and Veronica @15, Tag Number 3, and Jaya He. Born in 1963 in Ernakulam, Kerala, Valath is the son of the acclaimed writer and historian V. V. K. Valath and Krishodhari. The novelist is the youngest of their three sons. The eminent writer forayed into Malayalam literature in 1987 with the short story Vala, which he wrote for Mathrubhumi Weekly. James, among others. 2003 marked his debut in Malayalam cinema, when he helmed the children’s film Harappa to Pokhran, aired on Surya TV.

Later, he scripted two other films Thavalam and KQ. He has the credit of directing a documentary titled, And The Fight Goes On, based on the life of MP Anil Kumar. His other television projects include Crime File, which he scripted for Jeevan TV and Surya TV. He worked on the shows Vipani, telecast on Doordarshan, Business Watch, aired on Asianet, and the Jeevan TV show Haritha Keralam. The acclaimed novelist bagged several awards for his notable contributions to Malayalam literature and cinema.

His film Harappa to Pokhran was shortlisted for Kerala State Television Awards for best children’s program. In 2014, he bagged the Padmarajan Award for his short story collection, Nyaayavithi. In 2015, he was awarded the C. Ayyappan Award for a short story. His radio show Janala which he scripted for the All India Radio station Thrissur was nominated for the Certificate of Merit in 2017 during the Akashvani contest.

Socrates wrote the dialogue and screenplay for the 2008 Malayalam flick Thalavam, helmed by Baiju.
