Vimmy Mariam George is an award-winning dubbing artist from Kerala. She is a well-known voice in the realm of radio journalism as well as an accomplished singer. She has over three hundred audio cassettes to her credit.
While Vimmy was doing her graduation at BCM College, Kerala, she was the singer for Margamkali group and won the musical contest at Mahatma Gandhi University Youth festival, thrice. It brought her to public attention as Doordarshan was the national channel on those days. Vimmy later hosted many cultural events on Surya, Asianet, and other Kerala channels.
When Vimmy was in her early twenties, and doing stage shows in the Gulf, she got an offer to work as an FM radio announcer. She became the first Malayalam female FM radio announcer. This dates back to 1998 when Vimmy did live programmes on 106.2 HUM FM, a Pakistan owned radio channel. Her favorite stage shows were singing with K.J. Yesudas, S. Balasubrahmaniam, and K.S. Chitra. After working in the Gulf for more than six years, Vimmy returned to India and became a member of the Dubbing Association. In 2006, Vimmy began her career as a dubbing artist. Although she was a novice and had no prior training in the art of dubbing, she rendered her maiden voice for actress Khushboo in the film Kaiyoppu.
Her joy knew no bounds when she was awarded the Kerala State Film Award for the Best Dubbing Artist (female) in 2006. The dubbing was also challenging for Vimmy as she had to flawlessly capture the ebb and flow of the heroine’s emotions. She acknowledges that it was the director of the movie, Ranjith, who helped her capture the right emotions in the dialogues. Vimmy nailed her first assignment since the audience reception was very good and people enjoyed the fresh voice. In 2016, Vimmy rendered her voice to the newly launched Kochi Metro and said, “I am so happy that I can be a part of the history of the first metro in the state by lending my voice. Of course, it is a proud moment for me. Having done jingles and ads for radio, television, and films, and dubbed in films it’s a thrill to alert our valuable commuters traveling in Kochi Metro.” Vimmy has a vibrant voice career and believes that the art of dubbing is of equal importance as any other artistic performance on screen. Asserting her role as a dubbing artist Vimmy has very proudly said, “We work behind the scenes, but that doesn’t mean our contribution is any less.”
