Uma Shivakumar was a veteran character actor in Kannada cinema. Before making her debut in films, she was a classical musician. But soon she came under the influence of theater movement in the 1970s and joined the movement and went on to act in over 30 plays in her career. To make herself an amateur theater personality, she joined Landmark Productions. She is known for portraying step-mother role to Tughluq in a famous play  ‘Muhammad Bin Tughluq.' Whether it is movies or theatrical work she received a lot of affection from her audience during her career. People had christened Uma affectionately as ‘’Baddi Bangaramma” after she immortalized the titular role of Baddi Bangaramma in a film; Uma Shivakumar’s performance as a moneylender in the film ‘Baddi Bangaramma’ received appreciation and she was henceforth referred to as Baddi Bangaramma by the audience. The film released in theaters in 1984 and was a box office hit. 

Being a product of amateur theater Uma gave many memorable performances in many Kannada movies. She acted in over 170 films in Kannada. Uma faced her first big commercial success through ‘Kesarina Kamala’ that released in 1973. She received the State best-supporting actress for her role in ‘Chandanada Gombe’. Uma Shivakumar also opened a parlor In Bangalore. She died after a prolonged illness. Born in the year 1941, she passed away at her residence on June 25, 2013, when she was 71 years old.
