Vijayadan Detha was a Hindi writer. He was born, on September 1, 1926, in Borunda, Jodhpur state, British India, now in Rajasthan. He was also known as Bijji. He was better known as an Indian writer in Rajasthani Literature. He wrote folklore and Satires. He promotes Feminism, Socialism, and Antifeudalism subjects in his writing. He married Sayar Kanwar, and had five children. His father’s name was Sabaldan Detha, and his grandfather was Jugtidan Detha. Both were also famous poets of Rajasthan. He lost his father, at the age of four, along with the two brothers. He joined his college in 1944, and enrolled his name in poetry. His brother Kuberdan Detha also liked poetry, and as a child Vijaydan Detha passed his brother’s poem under his name, this incident made him give those poems his name, so he has always given the credit for his success to his brother Kuberdan.
He has written Batan Ri Phulwari in 1960, Prerana in 1953, Soratha in 1956, Rajasthani Lokgeet in 1958, Tido Rao in 1965, Uljhan and Alekhun Hitler in 1984, Roonkh in 1987, and Kaboo Rani in 1989, in Rajasthani language. He had great respect for his mother tongue Ranjasthani, and he had never written in any language. Still, his most of his work was translated into Hindi, namely Baton Ki Bagiya in 2019, Usha in 1946, Baapu Ke Teen Hatyare in 1948, Column in Jwala Weekly in 1949, Sahitya aur Samaaj in 1960, Anokha Ped in 1968, Phoolwari in 1992, Chaudharain Ki Chaturaai in 1996, Antaraal, Sapan Priya, Mero Darad Na Jane Koy, and Atirikta in 1997, Mahamilan and Priya Mrinal in 1998. This trio’s work came out right after the two months of Gandhi Ji’s death. He was inspired by nineteenth-century Russian Culture, from 1950 to 1952. He thought that if he didn’t want to be a mediocre writer, he should return to his village. By that time, he had already written about three hundred short stories, and thirteen hundred poems. He has won many awards in his career. He won Sahitya Aakademi Award in 1974, Bhartiya Bhasa Parishad Award in 1992, Marudhara Puraskar in 1995, Bihari Puraskar in 2002, Sahitya Chudamani Award in 2006, Padma Shree in 2007, Rao Siha (by Mehrangarh Museum Trust) in 2011, and Rajasthan Ratna in 2012. He died on November 10, 2013.
