Urmi Sahni is an Indian writer, director, content expert and conceptualizer. She did her schooling at Army Public School, Maharashtra and after that joined BYK College, Nasik for her higher studies. In 2000, she joined KC College, Mumbai University to complete her Bachelors degree in Mass Media. After completing her Bachelor’s, in 2003, Sahni did a Post-Graduation Diploma course on Film and Television Production at Xavier’s Institute of Communication, Mumbai. She had also done a certificate course on ‘Film Appreciation’ in Film and Television Institute of India, Delhi in 2007.
In June 2004, Sahni joined as a media executive person at Star India Pvt Ltd. Her responsibilities as part of Star TV's operations team included the launch and management of the network's re-run channel, 'Star Utsav.' Promo design, scheduling, planning, designing Fixed Point Charts, technical checks, and specials and package content development. However, in April 2006, Sahni joined the team of CNN IBN, where she worked as a Special Features producer. Her responsibilities included creating lifestyle trend stories, hard news stories, travel shows, music videos, daily entertainment news, and film shows, as well as conceptualising, researching, scripting, shooting, hosting, voice-over, and post-production.
She was also responsible for live coverage and special reporting on political developments as well as other national and international issues such as terror attacks and elections, as well as conducting sensitive and amusing one-on-one interviews and managing public relations demands. After that, she got the chance to work for various TV channels and organizations such as Bloomberg TV India, Star World, TLC, Family Fortunes Sol Productions, etc.
In 2017, she joined DB Digital as Content and Creative Digital Head. She was in charge of leading, organizing, and developing a strategy for DB - Digital's video vertical, as well as creating an original and branded content studio, reforming an existing video content platform, and mapping user behaviour. She also had to provide necessary training and guidance to a pan-India video team of over 45 people to leverage the hyperlocal reach of over 800 cities across the country and create a road map to increase the flagship website's already existing user base of nearly 100 million unique viewers per month. She resigned from the company, after working for four months, to start working independently.
Sahni is well-known for her work as a director in various TV series such as Notes from Rajasthan (2014), The Pitch (2013), Yarri Dosti Shaadi (2016), etc. Since July 2021, she has been associated with Colosceum Media Pvt Ltd.
