Pran Krishan Sikand known as Pran was an Indian actor. This legend was born in New Delhi during the British rule. His dad late Kewal Krishan Sikand, who was a Civil Contractor for the Government and had a transferable job. Due to which he did his schooling from various schools in Kapurthala, Unnao, Meerut, Dehradun and Rampur. He was excellent in his academics, especially in Mathematics.
Pran started learning photography from Lahore. He worked with A. Das & Co. in Delhi as an intern so that he would learn professional photography. He got his debut film ‘Yamla Jat’ in the year 1940. During partition, he moved to Mumbai and started his struggle towards the film industry. They say Pran had a sixty year long film career from 1940 to 2000. He was a part of around 400 films.
In every film, he did a different role making the audience amazed by his adaptable acting skills. On one hand where people hated him for the villain, he was in films like Ram Aur Shyam, he was also loved for his roles like Mangal Chacha in Upkar. Pran was a sports person as well and owned a football team named ‘Dynamos Football Club’.
His six - decade long career witnessed many awards. The Shiromani Award, Filmfare Awards, Stardust Villain of the Millenium Award, Screen-Videocon Life Time Achievement Award, Lux-Zee cinema Excellence In Cinema Award, Journalists Association of Andhra Pradesh, Film Journalists Association-Uttar Pradesh, Punjabi Kala Sangam, Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association Award and The Lion’s Club Award are just some of them.
He also got the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the most prestigious award for lifetime achievement. He was well known for his favorite line ‘Barkhurdaar’. On his death, the entire country mourned and paid him condolences.
