After India – Pakistan Partition his family fled to Delhi, when he was 10. He did his graduation in Hindu College, University of Delhi. After his graduation he went on to pursue a career in acting. He is an award winning Indian actor and also a director in the Bollywood.

He had been suffering from age-related illness and had been receiving treatment at the Kokila Ben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. He died on 4^th April 2025, at 87.
