Abhijat Joshi is a prominent Indian screenwriter, producer and director, known for working under the banner of Vinod Chopra Productions. He was born on December 1, 1969, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where he is also brought up. He came from a family of professors and he also works as a professor at the Otterbein College in Westerville, Ohio. He studied at the Shri H. K. Arts College, which is affiliated to Gujarat University. He got his Master of Fine Arts at the University of Texas in Austin. Besides English, he is fluent in speaking and writing the Gujarati language.
Abhijat also attended Shree Vidyanagar High School in Ahmedabad and joined the Gujarati drama competitions in school. He won several accolades for his brilliant talent in acting. He also likes playing cricket. He worked at CU Shah Arts and Commerce College in Ahmedabad as an English professor, before shifting to US to take an MFA degree. Since childhood, it was always his passion to write stories and penned a number of plays in both English and Gujarati languages. He is a scholar of Sane Guruji, and just like his father, they are both persuaded by the profound notion of dharma by Sane Guruji. These have helped them enormously in penning stories.
Aside from teaching, he has been involved with theatres. His brother,
, also works as a professor and is a prominent theatre personality. Both his parents were also professors. He worked for the Tamasha Theatre Company, a UK-based company, together with the Greenwich Repertory Company that performed in over 300 stage shows. In the year 2006, he wrote the screenplay of
’s comedy film, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, which was produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra. This film earned him several major awards including the Best Screenplay at the National Film Award in the year 2007, Best Story, Best Dialogue and Best Screenplay at the Zee Cine Awards in 2006, among others. After the success of the film, he subsequently worked on the screenplay and co-produced the Bollywood drama film, Eklavya: The Royal Guard. In the year 2009, the talented writer penned the story and screenplay of another Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s production venture, 3 Idiots. This film became the highest box office film grossed for a Bollywood movie. Abhijat bagged the Best Screenplay award and the Best Story award at the Filmfare in the year 2009. He also won the Best Dialogue award at the Star Screen Awards in the same year.
In 2012, Abhijat penned the screenplay and story of the Tamil film, ‘
’, together with Rajkumar Hirani and Vidhu Vinod Chopra. He also worked in Aamir Khan-starrer, ‘PK’, in the year 2014. This film became very successful at the box office. In 2015, he worked on the screenplay of the Hindi drama film, ‘
