Dharamvir Bharati was a poet, dramatist, and author. He was born in Allahabad to a Kayastha Family in 1926. He struggled financially owing to his father’s early demise. He earned a Master’s degree in Arts with a specialization in Hindi from Allahabad University and secured the first rank in the university. Further, he completed his doctorate in Hindi and started teaching at Allahabad University. Meanwhile, he was also employed as the editor of Sangam and Abhyudaya magazines. He also got married to Kanta Bharati during this period. The year 1960 proved to be a milestone period in his life as he was appointed as the editor of the Times Group’s magazine Dharmayug. He occupied the position for seventeen long years.
This was the peak period of his career and he wrote a lot of poetry, essays, and plays at that time. His novel Suraj ka Satwan Ghoda was adapted into a movie that went on to receive a National Award. The Government of India felicitated him with the Padma Shree in 1972 for his immeasurable contribution to Literature. He also received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1988 for his playwriting. He also received the Valley turmeric best journalism award in 1984, Maharashtra Gaurav in 1994, Rajendra Prasad Shikhar Samman, and Vyasa Samman. Dharamvir's second marriage was with Pushpa Bharati with whom he had two children: a daughter and a son. Pushpa died of heart-related disease. His poetical play Andha Yug was published by the Oxford Press in English. He has written the stories Chand Aur Tute hue Log, Drow Ka gaon, Samasta Kahaniya Ek Saath, Band Gali Ka Aakhkri Makaan, and his essays include Neel Lake, Thele par Himalayas, Pashyanti stories: Ankahi and many more. Dharamvir Bharati died in Mumbai in 1997 at the age of 70.
