Ramdhari Singh Dinkar is a Hindi essayist, poet, academic, journalist, and a patriot. He took birth in Simaria, Bengal Presidency, British India on September 23, 1908. His parents' names are Manroop Devi and Babu Ravi Singh. Ramdhari was a good student and loved studying philosophy, history, and politics. He studied at Mokama High School and Patna College.
Rabindranath Tagore, Milton, Iqbal, and Keats were his idols. Ramdhari's family was economically poor. He didn't even have access to proper footwear. His conditions forced him to leave the school early every day since he had to catch a streamer. In 1920, Ramdhari saw Mahatma Gandhi and founded Manoranjan Library. In his later life, Kashi Prasad Jaiswal, a historian, looked upon him as a son and helped him immensely.
Ramdhari has penned numerous books, poems, biographies, as well as translated literary works from other languages into Hindi. He has dabbled in the genre of fiction, satire, and historical. Chhatra Sahodar, a local newspaper whose editor was Narsingh Das, published his first poem.
During his time, the Indian freedom movement was gaining momentum. As a result, Ramdhari's writings reflect both the poverty he faced and the political atmosphere of the country. His most famous works are Raashtrabhaasha aur Raashtriya Ekta, Pandit Nehru Aur Anya Mahapurush, Parshuram ki Pratiksha, Bharat Ki Sanskritik Kahaani, Sanskriti Ke Chaar Adhyaay, and much more.
Ramdhari was one of the people who rallied against Simon Commission in Patna. The death of Lala Lajpat Rai in the march angered him, and he took to radical ways. However, later he mellowed down and became a Gandhian.
In spite of writing in Hindi, Ramdhari is equally famous within folks who don't speak Hindi as well. Ramdhari is the recipient of Sahitya Akademi Award, Padma Bhushan, and Jnanpith Award. Bhagalpur University, bestowed upon him their LLD degree.
Gurukul Mahavidyalaya and Rajasthan Vidyapeeth gave him the title of Vidyavachaspati and Sahitya-Chudamani respectively. In 1952, Ramdhari became Rajya Sabha's member and held the position for twelve years.
In 1960, Ramdhari became the Bhagalpur University's vice chancellor. Ardent Hindi poem readers hail him as one of the greatest poets after Bhushan. Ramdhari passed away on April 24, 1974. Post his death, Nitish Kumar has established an engineering college in Begusarai and named it after him.
The government of Patna unveiled a statue of him at Dinkar Chowk. Khagendra Thakur Khagendra Thakur was born in the village of Malini >> Read More... wrote a book on him. His two children; Ramsevak Singh and Kedarnath Singh survives him.
