Brijesh Shandilya aka Brijesh Kumar Tripathi is a Bollywood singer who pursued playback singing from a non-musical background family. He hails from Uttar Pradesh. Brijesh Shandilya was born on December 13, 1980, in Basti District of Uttar Pradesh.
In initial stages of his career, he learned Indian Classical music. Born in a farmer family, he had no music in his parental circle but inherited the singing bug from his mother.
But his parents trained him well to accomplish his dream as a singer. First, he learned classical music vocal from Prayag Sangeet Samiti in 2000 and completed in 2005. Later on, he learned how to play with several musical instruments such as the tabla, guitar, and harmonium. His music covers genres such as new-age Indian classical music, Bollywood music.
His childhood had witnessed joy and fun moments in a rustic village called Mahadeva where there was no electricity at all. He grew up with his two brothers, a sister and his parents. Though there was no music teacher in his family, he inherited singing capability from his mother when his mother used to sing during aartis and festivals.
The whole family used to sing along with her and Brijesh got hooked to singing. He comes from a pure Brahmin family, and his maternal grandmother used to tease him as she felt singing was waste of time and efforts. Yet Brijesh made his mind to pursue music.
This singer was not interested in studies and did not want to waste time and efforts in academics. So when his father asked the singer what he wanted to do in his life, he told his father that he neither wanted to continue studies nor work as a farmer. His mother gave him Rs 70 and he went to his uncle’s house.
His father gave him full mental support. He then came across a friend who was preparing for civil services examination at Allahabad University. He suggested him to get admission in a music institute and did his MA in Hindustani classical vocals.
There he pursued his music training under Guru SL Pandey and got well mingled with his family even and got to perform on stage with him. Brijesh then migrated to Kolkata and Delhi from Allahabad and became a ghazal artiste on All India Radio and Doordarshan.
He came to Mumbai and really had the toughest time in his life. He spent one year on the footpath and yet reconciled to his fate and remains thankful for those days. He feels his toughest days in Mumbai has only added to his art.
In the year 2006, he shifted to an apartment in Malad (Mumbai) and he was lucky to have an actor in his neighbor. The actor suggested him to give an audition in a reality show. Brijesh was selected but did not make a break with it. Brijesh did participate in singing reality contest but got eliminated. Hence, he began singing in restaurants until he got an opportunity to sing in a studio in 2007.
Even after shifting to Malad, he spent three years giving audition for big composers and used to return back empty-handed. It was a time then when new music composers were replacing the old musical talents. Hence, Brijesh shifted his focus to new composers and he met composer Sneha Khanwalkar.
She was a lookout for a new versatile singer. He met her in his house and sang a thumri by Rashid Khan.After six months, Brijesh got a call from her and she gave him his first break with 'Hooriyan...' from Oye Lucky LuckyOye. Brijesh was very excited but got hospitalized with dengue when the music was released.
After this solo song, the singer had sung numbers like 'Saddi Hobby JhappiyanPaani...' (
What The Fish), '
Mast Kalandar...' (SahiDhandeGalatBande), 'Heer...' (Hostel) and the title song of the film ‘
Some of the musical talents that he gets well acquainted include singer Mohd Irfan,
Aishwarya Nigam. Composer Daniel B George, and Swan&Kirkire.
Brijesh is also famous for the song “Banno" ('Tanu Weds Manu Returns') that has been composed by
Tanishk Bagchi and Vayu and written by Vayu. It is said before singing the song, the director Anand L Rai liked this song.
Actually, the song was a demo performed by Tansishk-Vayu and Anand L Rai felt that song would fit with the storyline. That is how this song ‘Banno’ happened.
The singer has also sung ‘HaaliHaali’, which is his latest Telugu number from the Mahesh Babu’s recent movie Spyder. The music is composed by Harris Jayaraj and the song has created a good response.
Although the movie has evoked mixed reactions, music by Harris Jayaraj has created an enthusiastic response. Brijesh has also sung the Tamil equivalent Aali Aali for the movie which has lyrics by Madhan Karky and sung by BrijeshTripati Sandilya, Harini&Sunitha.
This singer also had sung another Telugu song for Allu Arjun in ‘Sarrainodu’(2016) that had vocals of Hard Kaur, Sonu Kakkar, Brijesh Shandilya. The song was penned by Ramajogayya Sastry and music was composed by S.Thaman.
Besides singing in movies, he has formed his own musical brand ‘Madaari.’ “The name ‘Madaari’ was suggested by a close friend. Madaari is a monkey man seen in a village where people flock to hear him doing some fun with the monkey. This singer still reminisces about his childhood times, when he and his friends would get thrilled if a madari came to the village to entertain them.

Airlift' which was set to music by
Amaal Mallik and lyrics was penned by Kumaar. His latest hits include a song "Rocket Saiyyan" form movie '
Shubh Mangal Saavdhan' which was sung by
Ritu Pathak, him, and Tanishk Bagchi. The music of the song is helmed by Tanishk-Vayu.
Brijesh’s other popular songs are "BaakiRabPeChhod De" (
Lucknow Central) and 'Trippy Trippy'(Bhoomi) and 'BalmaYeh Karma' (Brij Mohan Amar Rahe). He also had lent the voice for the Title track (Golmaal) for the move '
Golmaal Again' which was composed by S.Thaman.
The singer also has sung a solo number "Mushkil Hai ApnaMeilPriye" in Anurag Kashyap's sports drama movie '
Mukkabaaz' which has got recently released. The lyric is penned by Dr. Sunil Jog and music for this song is composed by Rachita Arora.
The singer is happy that new musicians are making their way in Bollywood and this is one reason how a village singer from Uttar Pradesh made his way to Bollywood.
