Ustad Sultan Khan was an Indian Hindustani Classical musician, vocalist, and Sarangi maestro. He was born on April 15, 1940. Sultan Khan’s birthplace is Sikar district in Jodhpur, Rajasthan, a princely state in the Indian Empire. His nationality is Indian. He belonged to the Sikar Gharana. In 1982, his music was featured in the Oscar-winning film “Gandhi.” After that he recorded for Hollywood films, including “Heat and Dust,” Ivory Merchant production in 1983. In 1993, he performed with Ustad Zakir Hussain and Ustad Allah Rakha for the House of Commons in London. Then, Sultan Khan became a regular artist for BBC Radio London. In 1997, he composed the musical song for the BBC 2 documentary “London Calling.” Also, he composed the soundtrack for the Ismail Merchant’s film “In Custody” with Ustad Zakir Hussain. He was applauded for his performances by Madonna. He also performed at Prince Charles’s birthday at Buckingham Palace. In 1998, Ustad Sultan Khan performed at the White House in Washington at a Sufi Music Festival. He contributed Sarangi and vocals to Dizrhythmia’s first LP and Gavin Harrison’s 1998 solo album “Sanity & Gravity.” Besides, he also taught music producers like Sukshinder Shinda and Ram Gopal Varma.

Ustad Sultan Khan died on November 27, 2011, in Mumbai, Maharashtra, India, due to prolonged illness. He has been suffering from kidney ailments for the last four years.
