Debashish Bhattacharya is an Indian-origin classical musician, singer, composer, and educator. On 12th January 1963, he was born in Kolkata, West Bengal. He was born into a musical family, and his intelligence in music was quite visible right from a young age. His parents are traditional Indian musicians and provided him with basic musical training. He started playing guitar when he was three years old. His father gifted him a full-size Hawaiian lap steel guitar. When he was four, he debuted on All India Radio in Calcutta.
When he was fifteen, he created his genre in classical music called Hindustani Slide Guitar. At 20 years of age, he was awarded a prize by the President of India for winning the All India Radio's National Music Competition. When he turned 21, Ddbashish realized he wanted to study more about the new genre, so he went to study under Brij Bhushan Kabra Pandit. Srinivas. In 2001, he came with the extension of his created genre, the 14-string Gandharvi. In 2002, he made another type of slide guitar named Anandi. Debashish also opened a non-profitable School of Universal Music in Kolkata. In the school, he has taught music to hundreds of students from all over the world. He always wanted to spread Indian Raga Music worldwide and among people of different cultures. Some of his most famous works are- his album Mahima with Bob Brozman was very successful, and it got released in 2003.
Then, In 2005, he released 3: Calcutta Slide-Guitar. Both albums were well-received globally and are on Riverboat Records. The albums were also listed Under the Top 10 Billboard World Music Charts. In 2009, he was nominated for a Grammy Award in the category of Best Traditional World Music Album For Calcutta Chronicles: Indian Slide Guitar Odyssey. Some more of his very successful albums were Young Master Music Today in 1992, Hindustani Slide Guitar Album in 1993 and 1997. Bhattacharya recorded his first global fusion album in 2012, Beyond the Ragasphere. The album featured John McLaughlin, Jerry Douglas, and his daughter Anandi Bhattacharya.
