Kuldip Kaur was a Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi film actress. She is the first Sikh actress who became a household name for her vamp characters in films. She is regarded as the quintessential vamp of Hindi cinema. In between 1950-60, she could be seen in almost every film that was released.Â
Kuldip was born in a rich family. Kuldip was the daughter of a wealthy landlord of Punjab, and the daughter-in-law of Emperor Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Her husband was Mohinder Singh Siddhu who was a spoilt brat. Kuldeep got married at an age of 14 and became a mother when she was 16. She was a simple, shy and beautiful lady who was influenced by films after her marriage. Her spoilt husband always wanted her to behave like a modern lady by wearing a swimming suit and even get closer to elite class-men. Things were running out of control and Kuldeep started admiring actor Pran Nath. Soon, she ran away to Bombay and made up her mind to act in Hindi, Urdu or Punjabi films. After leaving for Bombay, Kuldeep did not keep any contact with her parents and even in-laws.Â
Kuldeep gave audition for appearing in movies and industry experts found her face suitable for playing vamps. Her first appearance was in a Punjabi movie named ‘Chaman’ (1948) which was a blockbuster hit. Soon she acted in Hindi and Urdu films named Ziddi and Grahasthi respectively. All her films in 1948 did well at the box office. Kuldeep was the busiest actress acting in various successful movies of Hindi and Urdu films since 1948 to 1955. When Kuldeep did not get a chance to appear in Hindi movies, she acted in Punjabi films.Â

She carved a niche for herself by playing the bad girl to perfection and will be remembered for her vampire characters in films.
