Cuckoo Moray born in 1928 was an Anglo-Indian dancer and actress. She was recognized at the dancing queen during the 90's. She was also called the rubber girl. She introduced the cabaret dancing and brought it to Indian cinema. Cabaret is an entertainment held in night clubs or restaurants while the audience eat or drink at tables. Just like most of the history of Indian Cinema, little was known about Cuckoo. It was only recently that her name was known. Her rhythmic, lymphatic, mischievous and playful and attractive presence on screen drew the attention of the audience for many years. She did her debut in 1944, which was a huge success and helped to boost her career in the Hindi cinema. She also starred in many Mehboob Khan's films. She was the leading dancer in many of his films, which was a turning point in Cuckoo's life. Her dance item in Mehboob Khan's film "Anko Ada" made her the lead dancer of the era. She continued to be one of the finest dancers until Helen and dancers like Vyjanthimala stepped into the industry. Cuckoo Moray was of a very helping and kind nature. In fact, she brought 13-year-old Helen into the Hindi cinema as a chorus dancer. She was last seen in “Mujhe Jeene Do”, in 1936 after which she had abandoned herself from the industry. According to the sources, she was not married and died pennilessly. She had cancer and left the world at the age of 52. She lived pompously and spent abundantly throughout her life. During her final days, she did not have enough money to buy even painkillers. She died on September 30, 1981. She was left behind and neglected by the film fraternity at the time of her death.
