Chitrangada Singh

Other names of Chitrangada Singh: Chitrangda Singh
Birthday: 28-03-1976
Age: 43
Star sign: Aries
With her stunning good looks it was not surprising that Chitrangada Singh came to limelight through the modelling route. Born into a liberal army family it was not difficult for her to get into modelling just after passing out from college. She was fortunate enough to straight away get assignments for leading brands like ICICI bank, well known branded jewellery etc. Her big opportunity, however, came with her performance in the music video “Sunset Point” which was conceived and created by none other than Gulzar. She could manage a follow up music video for singer Abhijeet before she got her first offer in movies. The break came in 2003 with the film “Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi” directed by one of the more renowned directors of the time Sudhir Mishra. She seemed to have delivered the promise that many people had expected of her and the rave reviews from cinematic journals worldwide only corroborated this. She was commended for her efforts in portraying her character in the deftest manner. Other films in which her acting got acclaimed were the 2011 crime thriller “ Yeh Saali Zindagi” with Irfan Khan; the 2013 romance drama “ Inkaar” with Arjun Pampal; and the 2005 college romance “Kal: Yesterday and Tomorrow” with Shiny Ahuja, all of which were by Sudhir Mishra, and had the typical Sudhir Mishra stamp on them, with challenging but slightly away from the mainstream themes. However, in between her film “I, Me Aur Main”, which although received positive reviews for her acting, failed at the box office. She then took a break from acting from 2005 to 2008. However her comeback timing in 2008 went all awry, come as it did in the midst of the 29/11 Mumbai attacks. Her foray into comedy films with “ Sorry Bhai!”, therefore, turned out to be a cruel joke, the film turning out to be a massive flop at the box office. It was rather painful to see a once promising actress who not only had histrionic skills but also the glamour to boot, after her comeback slowly degenerating into doing bit roles or item numbers only, and that too in regional films of the South. Although her mentor Sudhir Mishra gave her a fresh break in a short film “Kirchiyaan” in 2103 it did hardly anything to remove her changed status as an item girl, as previews of her shoots for the 2015 Akshay Kumar starrer “Gabbar” reveal. Whether this downslide came as result of her marital problems and subsequent divorce with golfer Jyoti Randhawa is not very clear, but the unfortunate fact remains that despite banner headlines proclaiming her thunderous comeback, she is no longer the Chitrangada of “Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi” fame.

Churni Ganguly

Husband wife pairings in the Bengali film industry have not been very rare, and the Churni Ganguly, Kaushik Ganguly duo fits ideally into this category. While Churni has established herself as a fine and sensitive actress who has matured very well over the years, Kaushik Ganguly has found his place as a bold and creative director from amongst the current genre in the Bengali movie industry, known for his treatment of unconventional themes. However, rather strangely, Churni came into the Bengali film industry via the route of Hindi TV serials produced in Mumbai, acting in Zee TV’s maiden soap offering “Rahaat” and also lending her performance to a mother’s role in “Chhoti Si Aasha” for the same channel during her two years sojourn in Mumbai. Earlier she had acquired a base in theatre, during her college days at Jadavpur University which must have stood her in good stead during her stint in Mumbai. Besides, her University also gave her the opportunity of meeting up with her future husband Kaushik, through the platform of theatre. Her debut year for films was 2004, when she had decided to come back to Kolkata, and was introduced to films by none other Kaushik Ganguly himself in the film “Waarish”, in which she had to portray the difficult role of a single mother. The way she did justice to her role brought her instant recognition by way of the Bengal Film Journalists' Association Awards (BFJA) award in 2005 for best actress in the film. However, being slightly off beat, it did not receive the box office ratings she would have liked. After this she acted in a series of films directed by her husband Kaushik, and most of these were on rather complex themes dealing with uncommon sexual orientations. In her next film she acted in the role of a flat bosomed woman and its repercussions on the male protagonist. Although obviously adult and complex in theme it drew credit for her acting as well as the film itself. Her next film “Jara Brishtite Bhijechhilo” dealt with female homosexuality, while the one after that “Chalo Let’s Go” was on a more familiar theme and basically a travelogue. Amongst other films deserving mention was the one in which she starred with the famous director Rituporno Ghosh, who enacted the role of a male homosexual in the film entitled “Arekti Premer Golpo”, incidentally also directed by her husband Kaushik, followed by another by the husband wife duo called “Rang Milanti” about the life of a TV actress. In between she briefly revived her contacts with Mumba,i acting with Naseeruddin Shah in the Hindi film “Michael”, defined as a psychological thriller and produced by Anurag Kashyap. On an overall analysis of her career one can easily come to the conclusion that in most cases wherever the husband wife duo have collaborated, they have brought out some remarkable films, although rather unconventional and adult in content
