Shamin Desai

The name Shamin Desai might not ring a bell for many but for Channel V it definitely will. Shamin Desai was an ad filmmaker, and a director. He was one of the forerunners of Channel V. He made quite a good impression with his skill to cook up characters for Channel V like Aunty 303. He wove his magic in many music videos which also included KK’s music video Pal. He was a very gutsy filmmaker and had an edgy filmmaking style. He was a professional person when it came to filmmaking, and was a good human being. Pratap Suthan, the founder of The Advisory, became emotional when he added that it was a pity that he couldn’t work with Shamin nor could he spend time with him. Shashank Ghosh, another filmmaker, said that Shamin Desai had a prodigious vision which was primarily the reason why he had been hired.

He adds without hesitation that Channel V grew in popularity because of Shamin Desai. He was a man with outstanding visual stunts, and a creative bent of mind. The number of testimonials for him is countless as his professional acquaintances poured out their emotions when asked about Shamin Desai. Sheetal Sudhir went ahead to give all credits to Shamin when she said whatever she had learned was from Shamin. Shamin Desai left Channel V in around 1997, and started his own production company called PS Films in Mumbai. His eccentric style of filmmaking was not welcomed by many, and this was evident when he made a feature film named ‘Auroville 316.’ When the news of his demise fell on their ears, Bollywood stars like Neha Dhupia, Emraan Hashmi took Twitter to express their grief. It had been known to many that he was a heavy drinker which eventually led to his death. The diagnosis of his stomach cancer was too late, and it had damaged his liver and other organs. He wasn't the one to quit life. Shamin desperately wanted to live, and the struggle was visible in his eyes.
