Wildlife and environmental filmmaker S Nallamuthuis a five-time National award winner. He is a director and a cinematographer who primarily works on directories. Subbiah Nallamuthu, popularly known as S Nallamuthu, is from Valliyur town in Tamil Nadu. He has a brother named Subbiah Arunan, who works in the Indian Space Research Organization. He attended St. Mary’s High School and did a three-year course on film technology, Cinematography, and direction at MGR Government Film and Television Institute in Chennai. Nallamuthu always had the passion for working in cinema. Still, under the insistence of his father, who is a headmaster, he had to join the Indian Space Research Organization as a cameraman and stayed for few years.
He filmed the landing of rockets, flamingos, and pelicans. Not satisfied with what he was doing, Nallamuthu quit the job and moved to Delhi to work in televisions. In 1991, he shot an environment film, and that’s how it all started for him. He also worked in the Doordarshan’s weekly show about environmental issues in the name Living on the Edge. With the documentary Tiger Queen, Nallamuthu started his research on the Tigers. His TV Movie documentary Tiger’s Revenge got broadcasted on the National Geographic channel.
S Nallamuthu’s documentary on the World’s Most famous Tiger Machli got released in 2017 under the name ‘The World’s Most Famous Tiger.’ The shooting for the documentary began in 2007 and followed the nine years of Machli’s life journey till its death in 2016. His rigorous efforts earned him the National Award for Best Non-feature Environment film at the 66th National Film Awards. As a cinematographer, S Nallamuthu has worked on Religion, Bodyshock, Mumbai Calling, Soul of Sand, and more.
