Amal Allana

Amal Allana is an Indian theatre director, scenic designer, and costume designer. Presently, she is serving as the Chairperson of the National School of Drama. She was born on 14 September 1947. She has her academy by the name Dramatic Art and Design Academy. She was born in Mumbai, and her father’s name is Ebrahim Alkazi, a theatre director and the first director of the National School of Drama. Her mother’s name is Roshan Alkazi. Amal Allana received a scholarship from the former GDR Government to study the work of Bertolt Brecht. She went to a two-year internship at the Berliner Ensemble, Weimar German National Theatre, Volksbuehne, and the Deutsches Theater of East Germany.

When she returned from Germany, she started working on one of the plays, Teen Takke ka Swang in 1970 in Urdu. She partnered with Nissar Allana in 1971, when she was rehearsing for her first solo play, Brecht’s A Man’s A Man at St. Xavier’s College, Bombay. Her first-ever production came in 1976. She married Nissar Allana, who she met at 15, in Ibrahim Alkazi’s theater group. Her husband is a doctor by profession but also practices stage design and lighting design. Her husband is also the Director of Dramatic Art and Design Academy, founded in 2000 in New Delhi. Amal has directed over 55 plays in Hindi, including remarkable plays like Adhe Adhure, Khamosh, Adalat Jari Hai, Ashadh ka Ek din, and many more such plays.
