Kay Benbow is an executive director, producer, and was the Controller of the BBC channel CBeebies. She was born in Sheffield and studied Theology at St Hugh's College, Oxford. She gained her degree in 1980 and joined the BBC in 1984. She started working for BBC Children's in 1988 and moved to CBeebies in 2002.In May 2010, she became the second Controller of CBeebies. She became the Acting Director of BBC Children's after the resignation of Joe Godwin in October 2014. CBeebies has won the BAFTA Children's Award for Channel of the Year five times during Kay’s tenure.
She received an honorary degree from the University of Sheffield in recognition of his achievements in the industry and his commitment to the research-based understanding of the engagement of young children with television in January 2017. Kay is an independent Children’s Media Specialist and has experience in Children’s Broadcasting of 25 years. Working on a variety of development and broadcast projects, currently, she is a Script Editor on Clangers series 3.
