Soumyak Kanti Debiswas

Soumyak Kanti Debiswas is an entrepreneur, director and playwright of Indian origin. He has studied a Master of Arts degree from the Royal College of Art, where he was an Inlaks scholar from 2010 to 2012. Prior to that, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from Jadavpur University in 2007. He is also an alumni of St, Xavier’s Collegiate School. After his studies, he founded a nightclub at The Yard Theatre, where he curated over 250 nights in collaboration with London's progressive music promoters. Before pursuing his passion for entrepreneurship, he worked and gained a lot of experience in the theatre and film industry as an actor, playwright, and director.

He co-founded Tin Can in June 2005, where he worked for five years as an actor, playwright, and director for theatre and film productions. His works have been produced by some of the most prestigious institutions in the UK, including the National Theatre Studio London, Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, and Theatre Royal Plymouth. Additionally, he has received recognition for his direction, having been awarded Best Director at Thespo Theatre Festival X in Mumbai. Soumyak has also been seen on the silver screen two times. He has played lead roles in two feature films: Tasher Desh-The Land of Cards (2012) and Madly Bangali (2010). In 2016, he returned to India to write as well as produce a feature film called Cat Sticks (MUBI), which was screened at the Slamdance Film Festival 2019 and won a Grand Jury prize.

Later in the year 2022, he wrote and directed - The Daughter, a short film starring Naseeruddin, which was screened at MAMI Mumbai and the Palm Springs Film Festival. He is also a great entrepreneur and is the founder of a product design studio called Field with his brother. He co-founded Field Studio in August 2020, where he currently serves as Creative Director of the product design studio. Additionally, he was a co-founder of Dacoit Films from July 2016 to January 2019, where he was working as a writer and producer for the feature film Cat Sticks.
