Afsar Ahmed was an Indian Bengali writer. He wrote about 27 novels and 24 books of other categories. He was born on 5th April 1959 in Howrah, West Bengal. He earned his post-graduate degree in Bangla from Kolkata University. He initially started writing poems and later moved to writing prose. His work Bangali Musalmaner Biyer Gan was published in Porichoy in 1978. Ahmad’s first novel Ghor Gerosti was published in 1980. His work was published in Baromas, Kalantor, Porichoy, and Saroswato. He also worked in a literary magazine called Protikshon for a few years. He also worked at Paschimbanga Bangla Akademi. His books have also been part of the school curriculum in Assam.
Many movies have been based on his novel. For instance, Mrinal Sen’s Aamar Bhuban was based on the novel Dhan Jyotsana, Sandeep Chattopadhyay’s Raat Koto Holo is based on the novel Hatyar Promad Jani. Afsar Ahmad also translated books of other languages into Bangla. Some of his novels include Khondo Bikhondo, Dwitito Bibi, Ek Ghorsowar Kissa, etc. He received Somen Chanda Puraskar from Paschimbanga Bangla Akademi in 1998, and was awarded with Sahitya Akademi Translation Prize for this work in 2000. He also received Bankim Puraskar in 2009 and Sahitya Akademi Award in 2017 for his novel Sei Nikhoj Manushta. He died on August 4, 2018 at the age of 59.
