Jnanada Kakati was born and bought up in Shillong, Meghalaya. Since she was a little girl, she was very interested in singing and dancing, but she received no support from her parents. When she was in the 6th grade, the legendary Bishnu Rabha saw her dancing and offered to teach her. However, in just a week, she had to leave as well-wishers again told her mother that the dancing business wasn’t good. Even after all this, she persisted and by the time she was in college, she was the first choice to sing and dance and even teach others. When none of their threats worked, Jnanada’s parents decided to get her married. However, much to their dismay, their son-in-law happened to be a singer as well and encouraged Jnanada to act in films and follow her heart.
Once, during a trip to Guwahati, one of her husband Lohit’s friend, offered a role to Jnanada. Her first film, Par Ghat, was released in 1948. She starred opposite the legendary actor, Chandra Phukan. It was directed by Bhubhan Das and assisted by Kalyan Gupta. Her celluloid drama, Puberun, shot Jnanada to international fame. She was the first Assamese actor to represent India at the Berlin Film Festival and the only Indian actor that year. She became the first Assamese actress to receive the President’s Silver Medal in 1960 and was also the first announcer of All India Radio Shillong/Guwahati in 1948.
Some of Jnanada’s notable films include, Piyali Phukan, Sarapat, Lakhimi, Ronga Police, Saknoiya, Pratham Ragini, Narkasur, etc. She has also acted in various Bengali movies like, Nilachaley Mahaprabhu, Gadher Mathe, Barma, etc. She would also sing at the Akashwani centres of Shillong and Guwahati and has also recorded songs in the gramophone.
