Born on 27th April 1857, Jamshedji Framji Madan (J.F. Madan) was an initial film producer, film and theatre artist. J F Madan founded The Elphinstone Bioscope Company- where he produced some silent movies. A few of his notable works include Satyavadi Raja Harishchandra (1917), the first film to be shot in the city, and Bilwamangal (1919).
In his early days, because of poor financial condition, J.F. Madan had to work in the Elphinstone Dramatic Club. Later in1875, he turned the club into a major theatre company with his commendable hard work and success. He had also established some great business companies in Karachi and Calcutta.
From 1930 to 1940, his contribution was responsible for the exhibition and production of movies. His company owns about 127 theatres, a few of which are – The Electric Theatre, Crown Cinema, and Grand Opera House.
