Pandit Durgalal, Vidushi Uma Sharma and Rajendra Gangani were her dance tutors. She studied at St. Stephen's College and got her Master's in Sociology.

Sharmistha had traveled to over 40 countries and spread the cultural heritage of India through Kathak. In 2014, Sharmistha Mukherjee joined the Congress Party. After entering the party, she started working with the party workers, participated in rallies, and got an appreciation for her simplicity.
