Suvra Mukherjee served as India's First Lady from 2012 untill 2015. Mukherjee migrated to Calcutta when she was 10 years old. She was born on September 17, 1940, in the Jessore District of the Bengal Presidency (now in Bangladesh). On July 13, 1957, she got married to Pranab Mukherjee. Early in the 1970s, she taught history and English grammar in West Midnapore while simultaneously holding two master's degrees, one each in political science and history. Mukherjee was a skilled vocalist who specialized in singing Rabindra Sangeet or music by Rabindranath Tagore. She founded the Geetanjali Troupe, whose goal is to spread Tagore's philosophy via song and dance, and she also spent many years performing in his dance dramas in India, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
In her house on Talkatora Road, the band frequently practiced. Sharmistha Mukherjee, with whom she occasionally performed, inherited her mother's love of classical dance. She also painted and took part in both solo and group exhibits. Mukherjee wrote two books: Chena Achenai Chin, a travelogue on her trip to China, and Chokher Aloey, a personal account of her close interactions with Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Additionally, she promoted many of vocalist Kumar Sanu's CDs that were associated with Rabindra Sangeet and sacred music. Mukherjee, who was 74, passed away in a hospital in New Delhi, India.
