Shubhankar Banerjee

Pandit Subhankar is a Hindu scholar. He was born on 20th August 1966 in Kolkata, India, and died on 25th August 2021. Banerjee's unique tabla approach is the outcome of decades of learning. His mother, Kajalrekha, was a singer-composer who taught him tabla at the age of four and encouraged his musical aspirations. He began his studies in the Benares Gharana with Pandit Manik Das, followed by an extensive fellowship in the Farukhabad Gharana with Professor Swapan Siva. His outstanding tabla solos, flexibility as a singer, and songwriting abilities made him a unique performer. He also began to accompany Bangla gaan performers. Subhankar was the All India Ranks youngest top-grade tabla musician. He received excellent praise for his performances at the Nobel Peace Prize concert, the Festival of India in Brazil, the Asian Fantasy Concert in Japan, and as a member of the London Symphony Orchestra.

His collaborations with well-known worldwide artists resulted in albums such as 'Tabla Story,' 'Heart Beat,' and 'Calcutta to California,' among many more. Banerjee has produced music for the horror drama Panjim 60km, directed by Nibedita Roy and written by Ekta Jatwar. Pandit Shalil Shankar, a famous sitarist, invited Subhankar to travel overseas with him. He learned numerous music lessons the hard way during this nine-month tour since the senior musician was a strict taskmaster. This experience taught him to recognize the needs of each performer Subhankar supported. He also started listening to historical recordings of tabla maestros, analyzing their approach and learning about their unique patterns. That enabled him to add a new depth to his solo shows.
