Bengali Musical Artist Suprabha Sarkar

Suprabha was Born in December 25th, 1919, to Mr. Upendranath and Mrs. Champaknalini Ghosh. Suprabha is married to Advocate Sudhir Chandra Sarkar, and they have two sons. Her music career started at the age of thirteen years, with her participation in Galpadadur Asar in All India Radio, Kolkata (Calcutta). That brought her to the limelight. Coming from a music-inclined family, she got all the support from her parents. Her mother, Champaknalini Ghosh, gave her lessons in devotional songs. Her formal training started from Dhrupadia Shishir Guha and thereon to Tarapada Chakraborty. She got a long-time contract from A.I.R. to host the early morning program (Mahishasuramardini), and her association with the radio was almost lifelong. In the final years of her life, Suprabha Sarkar was Nazrul's song trainer. In 1936, she was under Senola Musical Products Company.

Through this Music label, she released her first Songs, which were Jadi Swapan Bhange Aji Nayan Jale, lyric by Hashirashi Devi and Alor Desher Bandhu He Mor, lyric by Batakrishna Dey. Both songs were tuned by Nitai Ghatak. Several of her songs were published by Senola before she joined Hindustan Musical company as their regular artiste in June 1938, the contract was from 1937 to April 1938. Under a Hindustan musical label, she recorded a song honoring Anjana Sarkar and Anuradha Ghosh. They were part of the Musical company when they were alive. She took part in the singing and acting in a disc record play, Bhorer Ashru, which was published by Bharatbani. In 1953.

Suprabha Sarkar was invited by HMV, she recorded two songs under Hemanta Mukherjee’s supervision, and she recorded two more songs in 1955 under Shyamal Mitra's tutoring. She was also a temporary artist for Megaphone Company. In 1949, Suprabha Sarkar wrote Rodana Tomar and Jibane Amar Na Bola Katha, with Manik Basu. However, after many years of working as a Musical artist, she quit the job of music direction. Suprabha gave Nazrul's songs a big boost through her creative and unique talent. Her Tagore songs became very popular. In films, she made her first solo songs for Leela Desai in Jiban Maran (1939). One of her songs she recorded with Ei Peyechhi Anal Jwala of Kundan Lal with Saigal on the reverse titled (Kabhu Je Ashay Kabhu Nirashay) came out as a record from Hindustan.

In 1935, Suprabha sang her first playback song in Indian films alongside Parul Biswas and Miss Harimati in the movie Bhagyachakra (1935), the song titled (Mora Pulak Jachi Tabu Sukh Na Mani) and the Hindi version Dhoop Chhayon (1935). Jiban Maran, which was recorded in (1939) gave Suprabha a permanent place in Bengal's playback singing. The song also earned her the harmonium award. The harmonium award was Suprabha’s most precious property, and she preserved the instrument and used it throughout her career.

She has lent her voice to films like Shuktara (1940), Shapmukti (1940), Rajnartaki (1941), Aparadh (1942), Aahuti (1941), Kato Dur (1945), Pather Sathi (1946), Swapna O Sadhana (1947), Abhijog (1947), Swayam Siddha Swayam Siddha is an Indian actress cum model worki >> Read More... After she retired from the Music entertainment industry, she started teaching at universities like Rabindra Bharati University and Surtirtha Sangeet Bidyalay, where she teaches music to students. Until her last day. She died on the 23rd of September 1989.
