Kamal Dasgupta, born on July 28, 1912, in Naral, British India (presently Bangladesh), brought a storm to the Bengali music industry with his brilliant skills. He was also known as Kamal Uddin Ahamed. He took his inspiration from his father, Tara Prasanna Dasgupta, to become a singer. He trained himself under his brother, Bimal Das Gupta.Â
He focused on classical music and later moved towards the Thungri style in his music. He used many other forms of singing, but Raga and Thungri were predominantly used in his songs. He continued to skill himself under Dilip Kumar Roy, K. C. Dey, and Jamiruddin Khan. He was a B.Com. student at the prestigious Victoria Government College. Kamal Dasgupta earned his doctorate from Banaras Hindu University in 1943.Â
He joined His Master's Voice Gramophone Company in 1935. It was the beginning of his journey in the music industry. These songs received immense appreciation. His famous songs are Tufan Mail, Ei Ki Go Shes Din, Jhamelar Prem, Sanjher Taraka Ami, Prithvi Amare Chay, and Ami Bhorer Juthika.Â
He also got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work on an American film, War Propaganda. He was allowed to compose background music for the film. His talent made him sing eight thousand songs. His music invented the shorthand method called Swaralipi. His glorious fourteen years as a career ended with Badhu Baran as music director in 1967. He died on July 20, 1974, in Dhaka. He is still remembered for his contribution to the music industry.
