Gautam Bhattacharya is an Indian Journalist and Anchor. He was born in the city of Kolkata in West Bengal. Gautam Bhattacharya’s father was a Financial Advisor and the Chief Accounts officer who worked with the Central Government of India. The family is of Bangladeshi descent and hails from Sylhet which is known as the tea capital of Bangladesh. Gautam Bhattacharya however, was raised in the South, in the city of Chennai. And it was his father that introduced Gautam Bhattacharya to the field of sports. He finished his schooling at Ballygunge Govt High School, which is one of Kolkata’s most prestigious heritage schools. After that, he pursued his Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce at St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. Gautam Bhattacharya is married to Raya Bhattacharya, and together the couple has a daughter named Lahoma
As a teenager, Gautam Bhattacharya's dreams revolved around a career as a bank officer, because it would allow him to pursue his passion for sports, whether it was playing football for Mohun Bagan or cricket for the Indian national team. His cricketing journey began while he was still in school. Gautam Bhattacharya participated in the Summer School Cricket at Eden Gardens. He represented Dakshin Kalikata Sansad in the Senior Division Cricket League at the tender age of seventeen and continued to play League Cricket for four more years before deciding to leave it behind at the age of 21. Gautam Bhattacharya also played football and reached the third division while playing for Sarat Samity.Â
Gautam Bhattacharya’s career began as a Trainee Journalist with The Telegraph in 1983 before switching to Ananda Bazar Patrika just six months later. Since 1985, he has hosted the Saturday Special Patrika while continuing to cover major events such as the Cricket World Cups, a host of online shows, and an anchor of national and international programs. Additionally, he has taken on key editorial roles, serving as the joint editor of Sangbad Pratidin from 2017 - 2022 and briefly as the editor of Zee 24 Ghanta in 2022. Gautam Bhattacharya is also the Joint Editor at Kolkata TV. Beyond his work on screen, Gautam Bhattacharya is a published author of the books ‘Jaya He,’ ‘Wiki,’ ‘Barpujo,’ ‘Bygone Era,’ ‘Pankaj,’ and Sachin Tendulkar’s biography- ‘Sach’. Gautam Bhattacharya received several awards in journalism, including the award for Sports Editor of the Year in 2006 and 2008, Story of the Year in 2006, Excellence in Sports Journalism in 2008, and the KKN Journalism Award.
