Raja Mitra is a very talented and versatile personality born on 17 January 1945 in Kolkata, India. Raja completed his graduation from The University of Calcutta in 1967. He is highly known for his work as a director in the Indian entertainment industry mainly prominently known for his work in the Bengali film industry. Raja began his career by directing a documentary and short filmmaking in 1978. Raja directed his first film ‘Ekti Jiban’; this movie won the Indira Gandhi National Award for Best Film of a Director and the P.C. Barua Award. He has directed many documentaries such as Coal for The Masses, Economy of HS Oil in Railways, Calcutta Footpath Dweller, The Tribal Resistance, Mobile Motif – A Journey from Regional to National, Calcutta, Past and Present, Towards a Global Breakthrough, Beyond a Head Count, Kalighat Paintings and Drawings, Ashray, Mural Paintings of Orissa, Scroll Painters of Birbhum, Jiban Patua, Vidyasagar, Nachni, Ananda Yatra, The Enchanted Desk and many more.

Raja has received many prominent awards for his films, like Scroll Painters of Birbhum, which won the Best Arts/Cultural Film award at the 36th National Awards in 1989 and was shown in the Indian Panorama apart from being screened in several International Film Festivals. His movie Behula was invited to the Cannes film festival and won the best short fiction award. His movie Jataner Jami was the Best Non-Feature Film at the 45th National Awards for the best of Indian cinema in 1997. Nayantara movie was in the Indian Panorama. Raja has won many prestigious awards such as the Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) and Rajat Kamal (Silver Lotus) for Best Music Direction for Kalighat Paintings and Drawings at the 50th National Awards. Raja was also a member of the National Film Festival in 1992, jury of the International Film Festival of India in 1989, and the selection panel for the Indian Panorama in 1990. Raja is highly known by the Encyclopedia Britannica as an acclaimed filmmaker. Raja’s outstanding projects, commitment and passion towards his work have given him widespread popularity and respect in the Indian entertainment industry.
