Shovana is a choreographer. She also produced collaborative works with western classical ballet flamenco, tap dance, and Buddhist chants with Buddhist monks. She was a creative director. Shovana Narayan researched and discovered eight Kathak villages. Shovana Narayan also collaborated with KK Mishra. She had bought out the dance video called Dance of the temple, which was on the philosophy and legend of the immortal Khajuraho temples. She was also an actor. She had played the role of the leading actor in the movie Akbar’s bridge and Das Geheimnis des indices tanz- a german film. Shovana Narayan is also a writer. She had written Various Books on the Art of Dance.
Her books are Indian Classical dances, Performing arts in India: a policy perspective, Indian theatre, and dance traditions, Rhythmic echoes and reflections: kathak, Dance legacy of patliputra, Kathak, Folk dance tradition India, Krishna in performing Arts, Kathan: the world of Shovana Narayan. She was born in west Bengal on 2 September 1950 and was initiated by Sadhna Bose and Guru Kundal Lal when she was four. She has been sent to Miranda House in Delhi and completed her Master’s in Physics. Later she went for completing M.phil in Defence and Strategic Studies and Social sciences from the University of Madras and Punjab University, respectively.
Narayan was honored with Padmashri in 1992 and had also received various awards like the sangeet Natak Akademi award, Rajiv Smriti Puraskar, Delhi Government’s Parishad Samman, Bihar Gaurav Puraskar, Indira Priyadarshini Samman, Rajdhani Ratna Award, Shrinagar Shiromani Award, rotary International Award, Bharat Nirman award, Bharat Nirman Award, National Integration award, Risca Award, Dadabhai Naoroji Award, Kelvinator’s GR8 Award, FICCI’s FLO Award. Narayan is married to Dr. Herbet Traxl.
