Lata Mangeshkar, the veteran playback singer, had formal training in music from her father. Her father ran a theater company in Mumbai, where she began to learn music with her father's grudging approval, and with whom she also sang a song. As her father was a conservative man, film music was not appreciated at her home. After the theater company was auctioned, her father died, and she assumed the financial responsibility by becoming an actress, first in Marathi and later in Hindi cinema, but in acting, she did not click.
