Sesame Street is a preschool educational TV show that airs on HBO. The show started in 1969 and has a total of fifty seasons and 4514 episodes. Sesame Street is a TV show for kids to help shape their impressionable young minds into learning about life and doing productive things with their time. The show was created by Joan Ganz Cooney, a television producer and Lloyd Morrisett, vice president of the Carnegie Foundation. The show featured muppets, both as a tactic to attract kids and as a funny portrayal of the society. The main character and the first muppet to appear on the show was “Big Bird”, a yellow canary who questions everything. Caroll Spinney (1969-2018) and Matt Vogel (1997-present) played the role.
Other famous muppets on the show are Bert and Ernie, who are best friends but with completely opposite personalities. The viewers favourite of the show is Elmo, a small and red muppet master who is portrayed as a friendly and cheerful three-year-old. Elmo’s character was played by Brian Muehl (1980-2012), Richard Hunt (1984-1985), Kevin Clash (1985-2012) and Ryan
Dillon (2012-present). Other muppet characters appearing on the show are Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster, Zoe, Rosita, Grover, The Count, Prairie Dawn, Abby Cadabby, Julla and the two-headed monster. The aim of the show was to give children a preview of the life they should lead and teach them ethics, values, relationships, emotions and American culture, and the creators used humour to fulfill their goals.
Each muppet character has one feature that is supposed to get imbibed into the personality of the preschooler watching it. Since cartoons are the way to a child’s mind, Sesame Street has achieved every single goal parents have set for their children. The majority of today’s American adults have watched Sesame Street as a child and they say that it has really had an impact on them in a positive way.
