The Secret Life of the American Teenager is a popular American teen TV drama created by Brenda Hampton. The show won the Teen Choice Award for Choice Summer TV. It aired on ABC from 2008 to 2013 for five seasons. The show explored the trials and tribulations of a girl becoming a teenage mom and her life subsequently turning upside-down. A spotlight was also shown on the complex relationships amongst teenagers and the effect of these relations on their personal lives.

Season 1 starts with Amy becoming pregnant at the age of fifteen with Ricky, who happened to be popular and handsome. Amy’s then-boyfriend Ben is supportive of her and wants to marry her despite the objections from his friends. Ricky on coming to know about Amy’s pregnancy wants to be a part of her life and agrees to raise their child together. However, there are some hiccups; Adrian Lee, played by Francia Raisa, Ricky’s love interest, is initially jealous of the recent developments, especially since Ricky had been flirtatious with Grace Bowman, played by Megan Park.

Ricky and Ben also come at loggerheads at trying to win over Amy. The season comes to an end with Amy giving birth to a healthy boy who is named John by Ashley, sister to Amy. The role Ashley is played by India Eisley. The second season deals with Amy, Ricky and Ben jostling and bickering amongst themselves on the task of raising John. Amy and Ben eventually break up and tensions rise between Ricky and Ben. Grace’s father dies in a plane crash, due to which she becomes inconsolable.

The season draws to a finish with Ricky breaking up with Adrian Lee and being furious at Ben. The subsequent seasons further flesh out the lives of the supporting characters as well as Amy’s. Even though the series didn’t receive positive reviews from the critics, it turned out to be hugely popular.
