Plot
A young man gets into a scuffle with a police officer after he’s caught drunk. In an attempt to gain some sympathy so the cop can let him off the hook, he narrates the tale of his experience with doomed love.

Analysis
Saba Nayagan is a comedy-drama that manages to elicit a few laughs now and then through the course of the movie. It uses a formulaic approach in it’s storytelling patterns, but even the witty one-liners and remarks that are peppered throughout the film fail to make it lose it’s status as anything more than an ordinary comedy. The plot itself is a tale as old as time where the story revolves around Aravindh’s journey with love throughout his life and his pursuit of women. Nothing about his relationships offer depth because we’re offered a very surface-level insight into these flings. The comedic elements in the film hardly succeed even though the attempt feels sincere, and the supporting characters get development arcs that feel largely unnecessary. The friendship plotline is much more well-executed than the romance, imparting warm, feel-good feelings when you watch the chemistry between the friends. The nostalgic, shared sentiments like drunken stupors, heartbreak, farewells and the like that are present in everyone throughout their lives growing up are the essence of the film. What’s commendable about Saba Nayagan is it’s realization of the fact that it’s main impact is supposed to be comedic, and not veer into emotional territory and it does just that.

Saba Nayagan is a comedy with romance elements that works as a simple entertainer, but doesn’t go beyond that. There are a lot of wisecracks that are successfully incorporated into the film, and some sharp wit here and there, but no additional depth and layers. Overall, the movie makes for a amusing, harmless watch that doesn’t offer a profound experience; it simply entertains.
