Plot

A communist rebel, Balusamy, is sentenced to death by the Indian authorities. He is transported to a high-security prison, where he bonds with Macaulay, a law-abiding cop, and Yamalingam, his would-be executioner. Meanwhile, Balu’s comrades devise ways of breaking him out of jail before the execution. Who will succeed in their motives?

Star Performances

This film rests on the shoulders of three performers: Vijay Sethupathi, Shaam, and Karthika.

This is also the final film appearance of Karthika, and she does leave a lasting impression with the role of Kuyili.

Analysis

‘Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai’ is a social drama that focuses on multiple issues. It began on a decent note by showing both sides: the establishment, as well as the ones against it. The focus is however, on the common man sandwiched in between Yamalingam, played by Vijay Sethupathi.

In the role of Yamalingam, Vijay Sethupathi has struck a chord. He has shown both the vulnerable side, as well as his tough exterior in a single frame. His exchange with Balu, played by Arya, is equally endearing. However, it is the supporting actors who steal the limelight. For those unaware, this film is actress Karthika’s final performance as an artist.

Be it Shaam, who plays the idealistic cop Macaulay [pun not intended], or Karthika, who plays one of the co-rebels Kuyili, both almost overshadowed the lead character of Balusamy with their performances. This is not, however, the only glitch with the film. The narrative loses steam midway, and at times the viewers find it hard to maintain their concentration on the film. If the director intended to compel the viewers to think through his film, he certainly messed up big time.

The editing is far from impressive. Also, by the way you come to terms with the conclusion, you are not overwhelmed the emotions. Even though it’s a remake, the recently released Bollywood film ‘Gabbar is Back’ handled this department in a better fashion.

What's There?

  • Good direction by S P Jananathan
  • Great acting by Vijay Sethupathi
  • Good support by actors like Shaam and Karthika

What's Not There?

  • Not-so-impressive protagonist
  • Loss of focus in the 2nd half
  • Not-so-subtle messaging in the film

Verdict

‘Purampokku Engira Podhuvudamai’ is a social drama that opens debate on multiple fronts. It is not perfect, but is emotionally engaging. If you’re an avid fan of actors like Vijay Sethupathi, Shaam, or Karthika, you can opt for this film!
