Plot

Two gangs aim for the lion’s share in the sand mining rampant in Malappuram district. One of them is divided between his urge for easy money and his love for his girlfriend, who wants him to quit the world of crime. A no-nonsense cop enters the scene, and he will stop at nothing before crushing the menace of the sand mafia, whatever the cost.

Star Performances

Sajil Mampad has done his best to infuse mass entertainment with an important issue. This may not be the best one for now, but for a debutant, an attempt in this direction is in itself a win.

The ensemble cast has done an equally impressive job, with Hakkim Shah, Jaffer Idukki, and Renjith being the standout performers.

Analysis

Illegal sand mining is not uncommon in India, but to make an engaging drama around the subject would be. However, debutant director Sajil Mampad chose the unconventional route with ‘Kadakan’.

The film starts on a good note, with most of the characters imbibing the local dialect of Malappuram very well. On that note, credit to the writers of this film. The visuals also make the setting of the film look authentic, as well as realistic. Since the film is not more than 2 hours and 10 minutes long, the runtime is more than enough for the makers to build up the narrative for their story.

Anyone, who likes good action dramas will be pleasantly surprised to see this film. True, this movie is more commercial, as compared to most of the Malayalam movies. Yet, in most of the instances, this film doesn’t look bizarre or jarring to the viewers. However, is the movie perfect? Sadly, NO. There is no explanation for some of the backstories, especially those related to crucial characters.

However, the acting performances somehow make up for these flaws. Hakkim Shah has got a golden opportunity in the form of a reckless sand miner, who wants to make it big. He is supported by the likes of Jaffer Idukki and Harisree Ashokan, who give their best to their respective roles. Renjith as the no-nonsense cop is another brilliant addition to this film.

What's There?

  • An engaging narrative on an unconventional subject
  • Good direction by debutant Sajil Mampad
  • Brilliant performances from the ensemble cast

What's Not There?

  • Lack of proper character development
  • Lack of focus on the right emotions
  • Not so impressive second half

Verdict

‘Kadakan’ is an unconventional action drama that does well for most parts. The subject chosen is rare, and the acting performances are simply excellent. If only the screenplay was equally crisp. This is best for a one-time watch!
