Plot

A hot-headed police officer Param aims for shortcut success. He discovers a drug racket through a raid on the local fisheries. However, when things do not go his way, Param is forced to choose between duty and greed. To what extent will he go to achieve his desires?

Star Performances

The technical crew has done a phenomenal job, in terms of the camerawork. The visuals add a rustic charm to the narrative.

The ensemble cast has done a great job with their respective roles. However, it is Pruthvi Ambaar, who shines as the hot-headed police officer, who is desperate for a shot at a better life.

Analysis

A group of villagers get into a brawl with an officer. The officer is hot-headed and wants success at any cost. One opportunity, or calamity changes the equations for once and for all.

But wait, if you thought we were narrating to you the basic plotline of ‘Kantara’, you are mistaken. This is ‘Matsyagandha’, a suspense drama revolving around a local brawl, and how a hot-headed and opportunistic officer discovers a drug racket, only to make a mess of it.

The plotline was such that either this film could’ve been extremely good or extremely bad. However, to the surprise of the viewers, this film turns out to be a rather decent crime thriller, though a bit over the top in some places.

The narrative begins on a sluggish note, though the makers do their best to keep the viewers engaged. As the movie proceeds, the audience is invested in it. The twists and turns are more than enough to keep the viewers guessing. True, the film is not flawless, but the narrative is certainly far from underwhelming.

The technical crew has done a brilliant job in terms of creating a rustic ambiance for a movie like this. They make us believe that we are seeing a story set in the Uttara Kannada region. In some instances, you almost feel as if you are watching a distant cousin of ‘ Satya Click to look into! >> Read More... ’ or ‘Nayakan’, though the film resembles none literally. On that note, we should appreciate the efforts of Praveen M Prabhu, who is the main cinematographer of this film.

The ensemble cast has also done a great job in this film. The combined performances of Sharath Lohitashwa, Prashanth Siddhi, Bhajrangi Loki, and Nagaraj Byndoor are not just natural, they maintain the pace of the film. However, it is Pruthvi Ambaar, who is the showstopper of this film. Known mostly for his boy-next-door appearances, Pruthvi packs a punch with the role of a trigger-happy police officer. We hope to see more such performances from him.

What's There?

  • Rustic ambiance
  • Good visuals
  • Decent efforts from the ensemble cast
  • A surprisingly good performance from Pruthvi Ambaar

What's Not There?

  • Patchy plot integration
  • Some issues with the editing of the film

Verdict

‘Matsyagandha’ could have been dismissed as another attempt at being a neo-noir crime drama. However, the writing, as well as the efforts of the ensemble cast more than makes up for the flaws, if any. Pruthvi Ambaar gives a solid impression as a hot-headed, opportunistic police officer. You can watch this film if you have a flair for crime thrillers!
