Analysis
Haddi is a violent, obscure, cinematic attempt at reaffirming and making way for diverse gender identities in today’s social landscape. It plays out like a message for gender inclusivity delivered through non-stereotypical ways, especially in Hindu society. A transgender woman forays deep into Noida’s shadowy underworld, coming across gangsters and such. Although Haddi’s thirst for revenge against the man who destroyed her family could be viewed as empowering, it falls short of the required sentiment. Instead, her descent into the seedy, criminal underbelly is glamorized In a negative light. One might even go so far as to say Haddi’s motives and subsequent actions seem so jarringly and fundamentally evil particularly because of existing stereotypes against non-binaries in Indian society. It might not succeed in imparting the profound message it sets out to, but it is quintessentially the perfect revenge drama. The noir cinematic style in which the movie is executed lends a distinctive, subjective aspect that aligns perfectly with the gritty and menacing storyline. It’s a dark movie about dark people, and if you can look past the lethargic and flawed plot devices, you’ll find that Haddi is the kind of film that stays with you long after you’ve finished it.

Verdict
Haddi is a revenge drama that set out to impart a empowering message about gender identity but ended up delivering a different vibe altogether. There are various generic revenge tropes that are used throughout the movie, and the characters don’t seem very well-developed either. Even with these flaws, Haddi is still appreciable. The thematic style, it’s noir setting, the suffering: everything works in it’s favour to establish it as a well-executed crime drama.
