Plot: The movie portrays Dury’s meteoric rise to fame. Also, the movie is a moving account of Dury’s struggle with the disability caused by Polio. The disability throws light on the impact of the health setback on family relationships. The movie’s title is the same as that of Dury’s ‘Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll’. The plot expands as a portrait of Ian Dury as a man of mercurial temper. Ian Dury, a Britisher, was a punk rock performer. Ian Dury had a troubled childhood, and his disease cast a shadow on his personal life. Here are the better and sad parts of Ian Dury’s life which are a biographical account occurring in the movie.
Many of the great singers and musicians have had a strange life and at the same time an interesting life. But when the biographies are put on the reel, those biographies appear stereotyped. As a man beyond the celebrity that Dury was, he proved to be an inexplicable puzzle. A movie even made a mockery of his life. But, Sex& Drugs & Rock & Roll does a nice job of lauding Ian Dury, one of the unique performers of British rock. There are the regular features available in a biography as traumatized childhood, battle in life, troubled family relationships, and drug abuse.
The movie has life in it but is unable to make a mark as a different biographical account. Of course, the filmmakers hold a special interest for Dury, his career as a musician and his achievement as a musician. Andy Serkis has done a good job as Dury in the movie. The actor is known for his dubbing for the movie ‘Lord of the Rings.' The revelation of the musician’s battle with disease forms the main feature of the film, and scenes are easily predictable. Also, there is a tinge of sentiment in the movie. Dury was gifted with talents but never had the peace of mind. The man had crossed many impediments in his life. He irritated his immediate circle of family and friends. But, there was awe among the audiences for his talent as a musician. Dury won the heart of audiences out of sheer determination and courage. There is a pattern observable in every artist’s life that makes the movie a stereotyped one. The movie Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll is a moving account but has been built on a premise that is easily predictable.
Verdict: The movie is worthwhile for those who love the late music genius.
