Plot

The film’s protagonists are Nikki, played by Emma Roberts, and Leo, played by Hayden Christensen. Nikki and Leo were childhood friends and their parents ran a pizzeria together in Toronto’s Little Italy neighborhood. Their fathers had a falling out, the cause of which they never disclosed and they ceased to be business partners and started competing pizzerias. Nikki soon left Toronto to go to London to train to be a chef, while Leo helped his father out with his shop and worked in a club while also pursuing his passion for cooking. When Nikki is offered by her mentor to run her own restaurant, she had to return to Toronto to renew her visa and develop a menu for the restaurant. When Nikki and Leo meet again, sparks fly between them. At the same time, their grandparents are also pursuing a relationship together. The film follows their families as they try to bury the hatchet, and Nikki and Leo’s relationship from being childhood friends to something more.

Star Performance

Emma Roberts and Hayden Christensen deliver good performances and have good chemistry together.

Analysis

The film has a clichéd and boring storyline. The neighborhood of Little Italy gives 1950s vibes and the characters make a lot of offensive jokes, including calling an Indian delivery boy ‘slumdog’. The film has a lot of such distasteful remarks. The characters feel one-dimensional and the film has a scarcity of logic.

What’s There?

• The film has romance and humor

• The film has a comfortable, homely vibe

What’s Not There?

• The film contains some insensitive remarks related to racism and homophobia

• The plot is clichéd and boring, and the storyline is disappointing

Verdict

“Little Italy” is a film that would be a good film for viewers who want a romantic comedy film with cozy vibes, and can overlook the absence of logic in the film. The film might be a good watch for romance and comedy genre enthusiasts.
