, and Lisa Gay Hamilton. Cuba Gooding has done the central character Eugene Brown in the movie. Mays has done the role of Tahime. Carlton Byrd has done his best friend, Clifton. Paula Jai Parker does the role of Mays’s mother in the movie.
Plot:Â The movie revolves around the game of chess. It is the game in which you need to outsmart the opponent. The movie Life of a King follows the usual formula and every twist in the movie are predictable. The movie is based on the real story of an ex-criminal Eugene Brown, who mends his ways. He becomes the mentor of the youth. The story of real-life mentor Brown is a good one. The movie has not limited itself to the stereotypes of its category. The movie portrays Eugene Brown, who underwent reformation. Brown had been slapped with charges of bank robbery, and he underwent 17 years of rigorous imprisonment. Brown is a history-sheeter, and he undergoes ordeals in finding a job. Brown does not want to return to the criminal ways. But, there are temptations from all quarters, and even a drug kingpin tries to pull him into a heist. Brown starts a chess club for the adolescents who were at risk of turning delinquents. Tahime wants to play chess in the club run by Brown because he has a troubled family life.
Director Jake Goldberg has put tremendous efforts into the movie. Gooding Jr. has given a solid performance in the movie. It is to be noted that actor Gooding received the Oscar Award for his previous movie Jerry Maguire. He has done roles in movies portraying real-life characters. But, the director’s view of the real-life character Brown has limited the performance by actor Gooding. Thus, Gooding does not captivate the attention of the audiences as he did in his previous movies. The characterization of the juvenile delinquents is not up to the mark. But, there is one outstanding youth in the movie, Tahime, the role played by Mays. The movie might not stand for long in the memory. But, the performance by the kid Tahime wins the hearts of audiences. There is violence in the movie which is very common in the heist operations. An adolescent is shot dead, and a scene shows a man bashing up his girlfriend and her son. Also, lewd language is prevalent in the movie. But, the movie comes out with a message, and would prove an inspiration for those who desire to change their lives by indulging in a game of talents. There are holes in the plot that one finds hard to fill. There is no explanation as to how Eugene could afford the premises that turn into a chess club. Then suddenly, inexplicably, Tahime’s mother becomes goodie-goodie and supports Tahime in becoming a chess champion.
Verdict: There may be many setbacks in the movie. But still, the movie is deeply moving and impressive. It is about a man’s dedication to creating awareness that one has to stick to rules to play any game and not be obsessed with victories alone.
