Plot

The story of Infinitely Polar Bear revolves around a small family of four.

Cam Stuart, (Mark Ruffalo) lives with his wife Maggie ( Zoe Saldana) and his two little daughters in the city of Boston.

Cam was suffering from Mania depression. Because of his family’s wealth, his family was able to fulfill their needs. But, after Cam had a manic breakdown, he was shifted to a mental hospital.  After this incident, his family condition worsened. His wife, Maggie, and his daughters, Amelia and Faith were forced to leave their house and shift into an old apartment in Cambridge. Their family who was already suffering from financial crisis, now needed a strong financial support to keep up with their needs.

So, Maggie decides to be the financial support for her family and starts looking for a decent job, but couldn’t find one.

Stressed by the situation, Maggie finally decides to apply at a business school to complete her education and get a good job. She successfully gets selected for the MBA program, in University of Columbia.

Maggie decides to take this opportunity to give her children a good future. She asks her husband, Cam, to come and take care of their daughters while she is away. After all, the doctor has advised him to stay busy, and moreover their daughters are missing their dad. Cam agrees with Maggie, seeing this as an opportunity to rebuild his family. But, his daughters make the easy-looking task a headache for him. Over the time while Maggie was away for her studies, Cam learned to take care of himself and his lovely daughters.

Star performance

Mark Ruffalo, as Cam Stuart, gave a mind-blowing performance. The struggle of a person suffering from Manic depression, is shown beautifully by Mark on the screen.

He played the role of a father who is short tempered, but still tries his best to manage the responsibility of a care taker to his daughters.

Zoe Saldana, as Maggie, wife of Cam Stuart, looks charming. As always, Zoe impresses with her acting skills. She seemed very polite and calm on screen, just like her character, Maggie.

Both Mark and Zoe looked like a real couple on-screen. Their chemistry was superb.

Analysis

The story of the film shows how two little girls and their father stood for each other in the hours of need.

The story is based on real life events that had happened in the director’s childhood.

Mark Ruffalo and Zoe Saldana are playing the role of her parents in the film and her character has been played by her daughter itself.

This movie is a wonderful family film, but only for adults. Because of excessive smoking scenes, Mark Ruffalo is seen smoking in almost all of his scenes. And not only this, there is excessive use of slang in the movie, which makes it inappropriate for children below 18.

The family sentiments in the movie are appealing and emotional. The director of the film is Maya Forbes. It is her first directorial film and her work as a debut director is impressive.

The cinematography of the film is also excellent, the film reflects the era of 70’s beautifully. Everything including, cars, houses, streets, dressing style etc. is shown excellently on-screen and is up to the mark.

The BGMs of the movie perfectly suit the narrative style of the movie. The songs of the film are excellent, especially the ‘ The Pirate’ song which is written by the  director herself. Another song, ‘Oogum Boogum,’ is hilarious.

In short, the movie is enjoyable.

What’s there?

  • Excellent cinematography
  • Good BGMs and songs
  • Mind-blowing performance by the star cast
  • Perfect direction

What’s not there?

  • Excessive smoking scenes and use of slang.

Verdict

A story of a father who is suffering from depression, but still attempts to take responsibility of his daughters to rebuild his family again. The movie will make you emotional, but at the same time, it will make you laugh as well. You should go and watch this film.
