Plot
The film, set in the early 1990s, begins with Daniel, played by Timothée Chalamet, driving dangerously fast in stormy weather, and all of a sudden, another car crashes into his car. At this moment, the story rewinds to the beginning of the summer to show the character’s back story. At the beginning of the summer, Daniel’s mother sent him to Hyannis, a Cape Cod town after his father’s death. Here he meets the town’s famous personalities Hunter, played by Alex Roe, known for everything he does, who is also involved in drug dealing, and MacKayla, played by Maika Monroe, Hunter’s sister. The film follows his journey from being a skinny, timid kid to being involved in drug dealing with Hunter and landing himself in dangerous situations with drug kingpins.
Star Performance
Timothée Chalamet plays the role of a skinny teen, with dreams and the potential to make it big very well. Alex Roe is immaculately perfect as Hunter and Maika Monroe’s flirtatious style suits the character of a town’s heart-throb with a bad reputation. Other characters also perform well.
Analysis
“Hot Summer Nights” is director Elijah Bynum’s feature film debut. The film has a great and ambitious start documentary style in which the townsfolk give their views about Hunter, but this style ends almost as soon as it has begun. Then the film turns into Daniel’s story of achieving money and embroiling in shady business.
