Plot
Kayla (Elsie Fisher) is a troubled 13-year-old who is lonely, shy, and socially awkward. She has no close friends at school, and even in the most crowdest corridors she remains almost unnoticed. Kyla secretly wants to be like Kennedy (Catherine Oliviere) and Aiden (Luke Prael).
At home, her single-parent father (Josh Hamilton) attempts to have meaningful talks with her during dinner while Kayla is distracted by her cell phone. He tries to brighten her spirits or talk about something productive. But that angers Kayla.
Kayla has a YouTube channel which she uses to connect with teenagers. She provides encouraging and motivational videos. Kayla has been labeled as "most silent" by her peers, yet she considers herself witty, calm, and friendly.
The movie shows how Kayla continuously strives to better herself. She conceals her acne with makeup to look good. She also follows a daily makeup routine. Kayla encourages others, as well as herself, to put themselves out there. Kayla aspires to be the best person she can be.
Star Performance
With Elsie Fisher's brave, honest, and compelling performance as Kayla, Eighth Grade is the finest of the bunch. Her intelligent, perceptive acting exposes the audience to her weaknesses, damaged sentiments, and quiet persistence.
Analysis
Bo Burnham is the writer, and filmmaker, of Eight Grade. In the movie he has crafted a unique depiction of a young girl. Her world revolves around internet and social media. Several films are made on the tech-obsessed world of adolescents. Eighth Grade is so entrenched in middle school reality that it practically functions as a collective flashback. The kids in the cast are all middle-schoolers, not 20-somethings pretending to be adolescents. There have been many films on difficulties faced by teenagers.  But what about middle schoolers? It's more complicated. Eighth graders have one foot in the sandbox. They are still children, but their bodies are exploding into early adulthood, resulting in a fog of self-loathing, hormonal swings, and restlessness.
What’s There?
It’s an emotional movie.
What’s Not There?
A few minor flaws
Verdict
Despite the brutal reality of adolescent life in the social media era, Eight Grade is an extraordinarily uplifting film with a compelling message for young people: give yourself a break.
