Plot:
Neighbors, Mrs. Montague and Mr. Capulet, despise each other and so do the gnomes in their respective gardens. Gnomes in Mrs. Montague’s garden have blue hats and that in Mr. Capulet’s garden have red hats. In a lawnmower race held, Gnomeo represents the blues and Tybalt represents the reds. After having lost because Tybalt cheated, Gnomeo and his friend Benny infiltrate the Red lawn at night and accidently the security lights are triggered. While escaping, Gnomeo sees Juliet (daughter of the red gnome leader, Lord Redbrick) and both get attracted to each other. Eventually, both of them have secret meetings in a nearby garden where they meet a flamingo, Featherstone, who encourages their love. After the reds destroy a plant nurtured by Gnomeo’s deceased father, his mother and the leader of the blue’s Lady Blueberry want Gnomeo to take revenge.
Just as he attempts to do so, he sees Juliet and backs-off. When Tybalt attempts to chop Benny’s hat with his lawnmower, Gnomeo intervenes and the two end up in a fight. Tybalt is assumed to be dead by the reds because of Gnomeo and when they attempt to kill him, Juliet intervenes and professes his love for him. Gnomeo is believed to be run over by a truck in his attempt to escape, but he is alive and turns up at a park.
When Benny tries to hamper with the lawnmower, it goes out of control and both the lawns are turned into a mess. Featherstone helps Gnomeo get to Juliet and in the process of rescuing her the lawnmower self-destructs itself around them. Everyone believes they are dead. Will Gnomeo and Juliet suffer the same fate as Romeo and Juliet? Can this be a happy ending? Even if they are alive, how will the gnomes react? To find answers to these questions, go ahead and watch the movie.
Analysis:
Although not completely relatable to the original Romeo and Juliet, the animated movie is a great take to it. What else could be expected from an animation? It very well portrays the characters in an easy on the mind and heart manner. The use of colors makes it more appealing to children. The songs and the funny parts are the cherry on the cake. All in all a light-hearted movie with loads of fun elements attached to it.
Verdict:
A good watch for children and also for people who wish to have an easy experience to watch a coming take on the Shakespearean tragedy.Â
